Sacred Space

What is Sacred Space?

“Sacred space” is a concept found in cultures and spiritual traditions worldwide, referring to a place or area that is set apart from the ordinary and is considered holy, consecrated, or hallowed. It is a location where people feel a connection to something greater than themselves, whether it be a deity, a transcendent force, or their own deeper, spiritual self. By creating a sacred space, a clear distinction is made between the sacred and the profane, allowing people to leave behind the distractions of everyday life and enter a state of spiritual focus.

Sacred spaces help to focus attention and energy, acting as a lens through which people can connect with the divine. They often contain objects, symbols, or architecture that reinforce religious beliefs. Sacred spaces serve a variety of important functions across different traditions. They provide a designated location for communal or individual religious practices, such as prayer, meditation, or ceremonies. Many sacred spaces are seen as a sanctuary, offering a feeling of safety, peace, and spiritual protection.

In essence, a sacred space is a place where the human and the divine can meet, and where the ordinary world is transcended in favor of something more profound and purposeful.

Why Should You Have / Use Sacred Space?

In our fast-paced, often chaotic world, it’s easy to feel scattered and overwhelmed. A sacred space acts as a physical and psychological “threshold” that separates you from the distractions and demands of daily life. When you step into this space, you are signaling to your mind that it’s time to let go of responsibilities, noise, and stress. This helps you transition from a state of “doing” to a state of “being,” allowing for deeper focus and introspection.

A sacred space is a place dedicated to a specific purpose, such as prayer, meditation, or creative work. By having a designated area for these activities, you eliminate the mental clutter of trying to find a quiet spot or setting up your tools each time. The consistent use of the space trains your mind to enter a state of calm and focus more quickly, making your spiritual and personal practices more effective.

How to Create Sacred Space?

Creating a sacred space is a deeply personal process, and there is no single right way to do it. The goal is to make a place that feels meaningful and supportive to you. It can be an entire room or as small as a shelf on a bookshelf. The first step is to find a place that feels right.

[Some traditions recommend facing a specific direction, such as East (for new beginnings) or North (for grounding). If this feels important to you, consider the orientation.]

It can be a whole room, a small corner, a closet, a designated spot in your garden, or even a portable altar in a box. The size doesn’t matter as much as the intention. Is the area naturally calm and peaceful? Is it a place where you won’t be easily disturbed? If you live with others, choose a space where you can have privacy. This allows you to fully relax and be present.

Make Any Space Sacred

Before you set up your space, it’s important to cleanse it of any stagnant or negative energy. This prepares the area for a fresh, positive start. Open windows and doors. Put on some music. Then, begin by physically cleaning the area. Dust, vacuum, and declutter. A clean space helps create a clear mind. Get rid of anything that may distract you from your purpose in this space.

You can smudge, or use sound cleansing, or other techniques to purify the space. I just like to get the energy moving and flowing around. Let the universe know what you’re trying to accomplish.

Feel free to add an altar or focal point. Consider whether this is a transitory space or a fixture that you want to revisit often. Is this something that you want or need to keep hidden away from other people, or is it going to be in a public space? The objects you choose are what make the space truly sacred to you. Pick things that inspire and resonate with your intentions.

Remember, a sacred space is a living, evolving thing. Feel free to rearrange, add, or remove objects as your spiritual path changes. The key is that the space should always feel like a true reflection of you.
