Stones of the Silent Earth: Grounding for the Dark Moon

Here, in rural Eastern Oregon, the night before the New Moon has a specific kind of silence. The mountains are still capped in white, the ground is a mix of frost and spring mud, and the wind carries a thin, sharp bite. Spring has arrived, but it still snowed today. It is a “hollow” time. While the rest of the world waits for the first silver sliver of the New Moon to start making lists and manifesting dreams, we—the practitioners who have been around a while—know the value of the Dark Moon.

This is the phase of the Silent Earth. It isn’t a time for “doing.” It’s a time for tethering. Here, the ground isn’t quite ready for planting. With the world feeling increasingly loud and the political air feeling jagged, the Dark Moon is our opportunity to sink our roots deep into the basalt so the spring winds don’t blow us over.

The Wisdom of the Below

In my years of practice, I’ve found that we often meet in the middle of our traditions during the dark. My tradition looks to the chthonic wisdom of the Underworld. Persephone has returned, but the Maiden of Spring isn’t yet carefree; she still carries the weight of the depths. Growth starts in the pitch-black of the soil. Leland’s Norse perspective finds strength in the “bones of the earth,” the unyielding rocks that have endured every frost and fire since the beginning.

The trap of a sedentary winter is that we become “top-heavy.” We live in our heads, consuming digital noise and carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. The Dark Moon asks us to take that weight and drop it back into the earth where it belongs.

Working the Stone: Hematite and Sodalite

To facilitate this “drop,” Here are two specific stones from my altar that mirror the energy of a moonless night.

Hematite – The Anchor Hematite is heavy. It’s rich in iron—the “blood of the earth.” Its name comes from the Greek haimatitēs, meaning blood-like. When you hold a piece, your body immediately recognizes the weight. It doesn’t ask you to fly; it demands that you stay put. It acts like a grounding wire for a house, pulling excess “static” from your nervous system and discharging it into the ground.

Sodalite – The Quiet Mind If Hematite is the anchor for the body, Sodalite is the anchor for the mind. Its deep blue surface, veined with white salt, looks like the midnight sky over the Blue Mountains. As someone who is a bit more reserved, I find Sodalite essential. It bridges the gap between the frantic logic of the brain and the steady intuition of the craft. It provides a “quiet room” for your thoughts.

The Weekly Work: The Grounding Ritual

You don’t need an elaborate ceremony for this. The Dark Moon respects silence more than song.

  • Clear the Static: Take your Brass Altar Bell (ID: 7747). Ring it once, low and steady, to signal to your space (and yourself) that the mundane world is now on “mute.” If you feel the stagnancy of winter is still clinging to the corners of the room, walk through your home ringing it to break up the “dust.”
  • Sinking: Sit directly on the floor if you can. Hold a piece of Hematite (ID: 7174) in your dominant hand. Feel its cold, metallic weight.
  • The Visualization: Imagine a thick, silver-black “tether” extending from the base of your spine. Visualize it sinking through the floor, through the deep basalt, and rooting into the core of the earth.
  • The Discharge: Breathe in. As you breathe out, consciously “drop” the headlines, the winter stagnation, and the “what-ifs” down that wire. Let the Hematite act as the conduit.
  • The Seal: Pick up your Sodalite (ID: 7168). Hold it to your forehead for a moment, then place it over your heart. Feel the frantic “thrum” of your energy settle into a steady, quiet pulse. Reach your energy above you, beyond, toward the sun and the stars, and the life-drenching light. Feel yourself unfurling.
  • The Flow: Feel yourself gather energy As Above, So Below. Let it circulate through you. Your roots are steadying and anchoring, while your crown is fresh and blossoming. Earth energy flowing up through you; Starlight flowing down like a shower of blessings. Let them circulate and mix through your core, waking you from toes to fingertips.
  • The Exchange: Let the energy return, carrying away the last of winter’s slumber—back into the earth, back to the heavens. Exchange bad for good, sleepy for awoken. Inhale health and growth; exhale stagnancy.
  • The Balance: When you are refreshed, let the extra ebb away. Don’t pull anymore. Just breathe. You and the earth and the universe are a circuit. You are one. Let go. Feel yourself quiet—energized, but not trembling. Peaceful and still, but ready to begin.

Breathe deeply and be ready to step back into your life.

From the Shelves: Tools for the Dark

If you are looking to bolster your Dark Moon kit, we have a few essentials currently on the shelves at Thorn Hedge:

  • Hematite Tumbled Stones (ID: 7174): Perfect for carrying in your pocket when you have to go into town and face the “noise.”
  • Sodalite Palms (ID: 7168): Shaped to fit perfectly in the hand during meditation.
  • Black Chime Candles (ID: 7583): I like to burn these during the Dark Moon—not for banishing, but to act as a “black hole” for my anxieties, absorbing them so they can be turned into ash.

Respecting the Void

The New Moon will be here tomorrow, and with it comes the “quickening”—the urge to plant, to plan, and to move. But for tonight, just be. The Earth is silent, the mountains are waiting, and you are exactly where you need to be.

Merry Meet and Blessed Be.
